How tights sizes work: every brand draws its own grid

The short answer

Tights have no shared size system. Each brand draws its own grid of height against weight and names the cells however it likes: across the 19 brand charts we checked, 9 use codes of their own, 8 use letters, 2 use numbers.

So a size never converts by its name. It converts through the two grids: find the cell you are in at one brand, then find the cell at the other brand that covers the same height and weight. For a body of 170 cm and 70 kg, the 15 grids below give 10 different size names.

A dot means the body falls outside every size on that brand's chart. Brands that size by hip, dress size or weight alone are not in this table.

How to read a grid

  • Find your height on one axis and your weight on the other. The cell where they meet is your size.
  • Cells overlap at the edges on purpose. Near an edge, the brand is telling you both sizes can work.
  • A chart without weight (hip and waist, or dress size and height) is a different kind of chart. Use its own measurements and do not translate from a weight grid.

What to do

  1. Know your height in centimetres and your weight in kilograms; most charts print both units, some only one.
  2. Open the chart of the brand you are buying and find your cell. Ignore the size you wear at another brand.
  3. On an edge, read the product's reports for whether it runs short or tight before choosing.

Common questions

Why are tights sized by height and weight?

Tights stretch in both directions, so a single body measurement does not decide the fit. Height sets how far the leg has to reach and weight stands in for how much the knit has to stretch around the body. Most brands publish a grid with height on one axis and weight on the other.

Can I convert my tights size from one brand to another?

Only through the two brands' grids. There is no shared system: one brand's B, another's M and a third's 3 can all be the same body. Our converter reads both charts and tells you which size at the second brand covers the same height and weight range.

I am on the line between two sizes. Which one?

Grids overlap on purpose: near an edge the brand is telling you that both sizes can work. The chart cannot settle it. The reports on the product say whether it runs short or tight, and that decides it.

Do all brands use weight?

No. Some brands size by hip and waist or by dress size and height instead. Those charts cannot be lined up with a height and weight grid exactly, and our converter marks such matches as low confidence.
