Where these numbers come from
- US kids: size is about 3 × foot length in inches − 9.75. Child sizes stop at 13.5, then the same scale restarts at 1Y, which is why a 7Y and a men's 7 are the same length.
- UK kids: about 3 × foot in inches − 10, so a UK number sits a little below the US one.
- EU: Paris points: about 1.5 × foot in centimetres + 2.
- CM / JP and China: the foot length itself, in centimetres or millimetres.
- Growth room: about a thumb's width in front of the toes is the usual advice; that is roughly one size.
